🌱 STEM outreach activity

The Awakened Seed: a seed priming STEM activity for Fascination of Plants Day

The Awakened Seed is a hands-on STEM activity developed by PrimSeedPower to introduce young people and the wider public to the science of seed priming. Participants compare unprimed and primed seeds and observe how early germination can change under normal and saline conditions.

The activity is designed for schools, universities, science festivals, botanical gardens and public-engagement events. It can be used for Fascination of Plants Day and other outreach activities focused on plant science, climate-resilient agriculture and sustainable food systems.

PrimSeedPower welcomes teachers, researchers, students and outreach organisers who would like to run this activity locally, adapt it to their audience, and share their experiences with the network.

Important scientific note. This educational protocol demonstrates the principle of seed priming. It is not a commercial recommendation and should be piloted with the selected seed species before a public event. The protocol uses plant-extract priming with chamomile tea; this is not biopriming, which would require beneficial microorganisms.

Get involved in The Awakened Seed STEM network

Download the presentation, facilitator protocol and student worksheet. Organise a local activity for Fascination of Plants Day or another plant-science outreach event, share your photos, results and short stories, and connect with other organisers interested in seed priming, plant stress and climate-resilient agriculture.
